Shenandoah National Park Camping?

My friends and I are begingers when it comes to camping, but it is something we enjoy doing. We are tired of camp sites, and want to "rough it." We are looking for a good area to park, hike, then camp. Maybe by a lake or a river, but not near anyone else. Does anyone have any suggestions on where we can find info about putting together a trip such as this. Maps, trails etc...

Thanks, and I'll remember to take my bear mace : )

Pick up a book called Day and Overnight Hikes in the Shenendoah by Johnny Malloy. It has some great hikes in there that have a good amount of information to keep you prepared. You should be able to find it in local bookstores, and if not, check on Amazon.

I've used it for a few overnight hikes through the Shenendoah. One in particular, a 2 night/3 day hike, we didn't see people for a day and a half. It was great.

The Shenendoah is a popular place, so if you want a little more privacy, you'll have to get out in the shoulder seasons, early Spring and late Fall. Which I tend to like better anyways, as the nights get a little cooler, making sleeping much easier for me.

Enjoy, it's a beautiful place!

And if you need to stock up on gear, keep a close eye on www.steepandcheap.com. One item at a time at great discounts. :-)

One more thing too, if you're not far from the Shenendoah, give consideration to going into WV at some point too. The Monongahela Forest and Dolly Sods area are great for backpacking and hiking. We moved from the area about a year ago and I miss that area...Molloy has a Day and Overnight Hikes book for that area too.
