I want to use some kind of GPS device to map ATV Trails? |
I want to be able to overlay these trails onto regular maps for reference. I have no idea where to start or what equipment i need. Any good advice? Thanks Most portable GPS receivers will interface with a personal compter or laptop, and there are several topographical software programs you can purchase that will interface with your GPS receiver that provide maps. For example...You go for a ride and want to display your route traveled on a map. By downloading the GPS saved track from the GPS receiver, you will be able to see exactly where you have been. Example 2...You plan a route from a map and want to be able to follow it on your ATV. You can plan a route, download it to your GPS, and you can follow your planned route. National Geographic, Terrain Navigator, and DeLorme are just 3 software packages available. National Geographic and TN have highly detailed topo maps. Delorme Topo 6.0 is not quite as detailed, but the price is a fraction or the others, and we've found almost all roads and 4x4 trails are displayed. The entire USA on DeLorme is $89, while NG and TN are $99 per state. Garmin also offers software and equipment. Whatever software and hardware you choose, be certain you get topographical software, and not a street atlas. Oh yes...the DeLorme Topo 6.0 has a very cool 3D capability that allows you to "fly over" terrain from any height to get a feel for what you will encounter. You can see an example of some 2D DeLorme maps at... http://www.rv-camping.org/co_lajunta.htm... Be sure to check out the DeLorme website as you will b able to see good examples of their maps and available products that should work well for your described usage. There are hundreds of things the software is capable of doing like route planning, annotating maps, adding roads or trails not mapped and much more. Source(s): http://www.delorme.com http://www.gpsnow.com I personally use a Garmin Rino 120 for mapping trails; but any GPS with a tracking capability will do. I go out to the trail and turn tracking on. Then I come back to my computer and used National Geographic's TOPO! software and import the gps track. National Geographic's latest version of their software includes 3D views just like the Delorme. |
