What is the best gps unit to use to lay out a trail for someone else to follow? |
I am laying out a trail for scouts and i want to put the route on a map. any ideas Okay, here's the thing: I have a Garmin GPS 12. Garmin doesn't sell this model any more, but you may be able to find one on ebay or something. You can store the lat/lon of the waypoints in the unit (up to 500 of them) then you can plot them on USGS Quadrangle maps which have lat/lon ticks in the margins. If this is a hiking trail, this would be the way to do it. If it's a compass course for the merit badge, you may want to find a surveyor volunteer in your area. Our local chapter of the Florida Surveying and Mapping Society is very active in scouting and we have volunteered to lay out a course in a local park with concrete markers that have identification tags on them. They are buried about 2 inches deep without any surface evidence. One local surveying firm is providing a map that is superimposed onto the park's site plan using AutoCAD. Use bread crumbs just like hansel and gretel. Garmin make the best GPS units. they never fail you |
