I just hit a cyclist, now what happens?

At about, 9:40PM or so, not even an hour ago, I was driving home, in my sisters car. The light was red, and I was making a right turn. I waited for all the cars to drive by, I waited a few more seconds, to make sure no one was coming, I pulled out to make right turn, AND BAM. I hit a cyclist who was crossing the sidewalk. I got out of my car, talked to him, he seemed to be fine. He said that his knee was hurting but thats all. His bike was a little messed up as well. We talked and exchanged names and phone numbers. He said that the light was turning yellow, and he thought he could dart across the street quickly and make it through the street. I'm not sure who is at fault, or what to do. Sorry if this is very vague or hard to understand, I am still shaking and frantic. He said he would call me soon to give me an estimate on the bike repairs. No talk about insurance, legal filing, police, etc occurred. He walked home, and I drove off. What now, please, I am so scared, whats next?

you are at fault here. you had a red light, so it is your responsibility to make sure that the path is clear before you turn on red.

I would give him a call and find out what he wants to do. If he wants to just have you pay for the bike, then I would just do that. However, if he wants you to pay for a hospital visit and stuff, then you should probably call your insurance.

You should've called the police. Failure to report a personal injury accident will get you in trouble. He might seem fine now but what happens down the line if he has some serious injuries that weren't apparent after you struck him?

You should have called the police, most of the laws concerning accidents say that if someone is injured a report should be made.

I suggest that you call the police now and give them your report at least.

Sounds like an honest mistake. Write everything down while your memory is fresh and get someone else to sign and date it (including what he said about darting out at the last minute, and the fact he walked home). Pay for his bike.

see what the estimate to repair his bike is and pay him....he sounds like a good guy so far but u should maybe record any convos with him in case he comes after u

why did u call the police on that? i guess nothing just pay for his bike it probably wasnt ur fault but to stay out of big trouble just buy him another bike

cyclists are under the same rules as cars on the road. if he was going through an yellow and you tried to turn right on red and hit him, you are at fault. your insurance will cover it if you are fully coverd. in all likelyhood, he will feel better in 2 weeks and fix his bike up and you will never hear from him again. the worst thing that will happen is your insurance (or you if your deductable is high) will have to pay for his bike, and if he goes to the hospital, you will have to pay for his cast or whatever he needs.
