Good medium cities to live in?

what are those cities you always see in movies and commercials. you know, where the houses are on a street lined with trees, and everyone is walking or riding their bike to stores and parks. community-friendly suburbs of larger cities. the "cutesy" factor without being too small.

you know what i mean the stores have awnings and some streeets are brick paved. its kind of hard to explain.

Lynden, WA. is what you describe 100%. 15 min. outside of Bellingham, WA

It sounds like you want the small town feeling where everyone is nice to you, smiles to strangers and looks you in the eye.. but big enough to have the luxuries of a larger city (like the arts, good local restaurants, parks, events, shopping, etc)....

There are few cities like this I've found in my travels... and frankly, I've fallen in love with each of them. You may be surprised at my list here... (they're in my favorite order).. notice all of them are college towns with Major universities located there.. i think this is a huge factor to the liberalness, artsy feel and general joyance to the city itself... life is busy and people are happy...

Lincoln, Neb. (population 275,000) UNL
Asheville, NC (pop. 75,000) UNCA
Fort Collins, Colo. (pop. 130,000) CSU
Sacramento, Calif. (pop. 400,000) CSUS
Charlottesville, Va. (pop. 50,000) UVA
Iowa City, Iowa (pop. 65,000) IU

There's a book that describes "great places to live" or something like that. The name is something like "Places Rated Guide....." [I'm sorry I can't remember the exact name.] It should be at your library.

BestPlaces.net - that came back when I just did a search for "Places Rated", along with many other leads. It sounds like it might have some of the info you'd want.

I know there's also a website that allows you to input the variables that are important to you and it returns suggestions for cities/towns that match. Darn, I can't remember that site, either - it was a while ago that I found it.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Gainesville, FL, places high on many "best places" lists. It's a college town (University of Florida). Charlottesville, VA, is hard to beat too.
