I have a neighbor that has a very unsightly yard in a nice n'hood. Can I call the city and make them clean up?

They have about 8 cars
10 Broken bikes
A couple washers
5 Lawn mowers
(I live on a dead end street, they hide there junk on one side of their garage and it looks really really bad)

Find out your city by-laws. It is different everywhere what is allowed!

Homeowners can be given a warning to clean up and then sometimes a notice that it will be cleaned for them and added to their taxbill.

Yes.
The washers might be considered safety hazards to small children.
They could become stuck inside.

Also, gas tanks on cars. Children may use matches.

I would contact the city/county about it. Our county has an agency that will take anonymous complaints and go look at the property and make them clean it up. They write up a citation and give them so much time to clean it. Then they stop back to make sure the job is done.

Probably. most cities have ordinances against that kind of thing, so they could potentially be fined by the city. Give it a try and see!

You can at least file a complaint with the city. Depends on their restrictions & (I would think) how many complaints they get, as to what they do about it.

If you have an neighborhood association I would contact them first. Most of the time there are by-laws for which each resident of the neighborhood must follow. The people that are on the board of your HOA (Home owner's association) may not be aware of any issues if they do not live on your street or have to pass the house to get home. If you direct neighbors are in violation of the by-laws the proper steps will be taken to make sure that are following correctly. These steps usually include fines, and penalties.

Good luck!
