Given the risks is it worth riding a street bike?

iam taking lessons and will be a compatent rider, but the way some people drive and rocks on corners etc presents many life taking risks

life is full of risks. there are risks involved with going to the grocery store, swimming, hunting, fishing, bicycling, mountain climbing, and even walking down the street in some neighborhoods. so the question is, is it worth the risk to do something i love that brings me happiness.

my answer is YES!

The most important piece of safety equipment is between your ears.

Riding a bike is NOT inherently dangerous, but they are so different to operate than a car, bicycle, etc. that people THINK they know what they're doing right before they panic and screw the pooch.

It takes TIME and PRACTICE to be a good motorcycle rider, not an expensive bike. While it may take a week or two to learn the controls, it will take the rest of your life to master it.

How long that is will be up to you.

I can tell by your question that a bike isn't for you. You are a risk avoider. Most motorcyclists are risk seekers. The way you talk about motorcycles is the way I talk about gambling. I would never gamble with money, only with my life.

Absolutely it's worth riding a bike. There are risks everywhere in life. It's how you manage them that matters.

If you are a safe rider, it is worth the risk. Motorcycles are fun to ride and good on gas. You just don't get the same feeling of freedom in a car as you do on a motorcycle.

It is for me.

That is a question everyone has to figure out for themselves. Personally I have raced MX so long that road riding seems a little boring to me and I stay so paranoid in traffic that I feel I cannot relax and enjoy the ride. I have a brand new road bike for sale right now because of that decision.
