How do I operate the choke on my street bike? I know I should use it when I start it up.?

How long do I leave the choke on? What is the purpose of it. I'm a newbie to this please explain!!!!!!!

I have a 1988 Honda Interceptor VTR250. The choke is on the handle bar. When will I know when its warmed up and I can take the choke off....soooo confusing!!!!

Dont use the choke unless you really need it if you do just for a few seconds , after i changed my pipes and rejetted the carbs if i use the choke it fouls the plugs ,

well.... the choke is for cold starts only. you did not specify on what bike you have,so the choke may be in various places. some bikes have the choke on the carb and you usually push it down to choke. some have a choke near the carb and you pull it out to choke. some have a choke on the handlebars near the grip and you pull or push it to choke. you should only have to use the choke during cold engine start up and as it warms up you can gradually take the choke off. some bikes have electric choke and you dont have to do anything. please specify the year and brand,size etc. the choke is exactly that, it chokes the amount of air entering the engine so more fuel than air gets to the combustion chamber.

A choke is yoused win the engine is cold. What it does win you use it is a flap partly closes the air intake of the engine so it sucks in more fuel. But if you leave it on win you are riding it the motor wont run at hi speeds, because it is not getting anuf air.
