If you are riding a bicycle on the side of the street, do you ride with or against traffic?

My friend and I have been debating this for weeks!!! I need to know if it is against the law or something to do it one way or the other.

Legally a bicycle is supposed to travel in the lane with the flow of traffic, obeying all traffic laws. It is generally regarded as safer however to travel on the side of the road, against the flow of traffic. It is easier to see the nearest threat, the oncoming car, that way and you are far away from what you can't see, the car behind you.
idk if it's against the law or anything, but it's smarter to go with the flow of traffic <same way>...I guess it's becasue if you or a driver ever lost control, you wouldn't get into a head-on collision.
I don't think there's a law, but it's safer to ride against traffic, so you can see them coming, not seeing traffic behind me, makes me nervous because ppl in s. fla cannot drive.
With traffic. But I think that's dangerous. You can't see the cars. You're safer on the sidewalk. If you get stopped by a cop just say "no speak english" That always works.
if you are on a main road its the law to ride with the traffic.
however in small quiet streets and country towns you should and can ride against the traffic. its alot safer.
In California, you ride with the flow of traffic.
I'll say with traffic. It's dangerous because it's the driver's job to steer away from you. Your job is typically to go forward and stay in your lane. It's easier for both people.

Against traffic - typically, every car that passes you might scare the crap out of you, causing you to swerve. They might not see you but you see them, and then they see you at the last second, and crash into another car.
