Rabies...I know few people might take this as funny question but I am serious about my question.? |
I am 30Yrs old, Male. In my early teenage while riding bicycle on a dark street I ran over a stray dog in turn he bit on my leg. It was a small scratch/bit on my leg. I got scared as one female said that鈥檚 looks like mad dog. It was already 9.00 pm. Next day morning I went for rabies shot on my stomach. It was a 7 shot series I think. Now I am not sure weather I took all the seven or discontinued. I never had any kind of rabies symptom till date. From last 2yrs sometime I go scared weather I may develop rabies because it was a stray dog. It鈥檚 been 16yrs I am talking about the incident. Few things to note: a.Not sure weather the Dog was infected by Rabies b.Very next day I started Rabies vaccine but not sure if I have taken all the 7 shots. I was very young not able to recall. c.Never had any kind of symptom even till date 1. Do you think my case can develop Rabies in future? 2. If there is a chance then can I go for Rabies vaccine now? IF the dog had had rabies, and you were exposed and not treated you would already have been long ago dead. Rabies doesn't hang around for that long- it's incubation period is a matter of around 3-8 weeks in humans. Even if we take the most way out scenario on record- a 9 year incubation period, which is not substantiated I must mention- you are still beyond the risk period. You do not need any sort of treatment now, and no, they won't give you rabies prophyllaxis unless you have been exposed. There are shots available to people like vets, who are more likely to be exposed- but this isn't likely an option for you. You can relax on the worry, you don't have rabies hanging around in your body, if you ever actually did. It just doesn't work that way. Had the dog been rabid, you took the shots. They would have come looking for you if you didn't show up to finish them, so it's more than likely you did. That would take care of any risk you had. And as I said, you are way beyond the reasonable incubation period, if you were exposed to active rabies. You simply don't have it, so you can relax. However, you might have to start it from the first shot. well if your getting a vaccine for something as serious as rabies.. i knw there are other serious things, but rabies is a nasty thing to have.. i doubt the doctor woudl jst stop in the middle of administering vacines.. (not sure ho it worked, like if you got one shot a day or all 7 in a day.. idk im 18 now) but Im sure you can talk to your doctor about a vaccine, better late than never.. but rabies from what i understand takes over failry quickly. if thats the case i woudlnt worry about it sparking up in the future.. but if your still uncomforatbel goto your doctor and discuss it over with him/ her Best thing you can do for that one is ask a Dr. I would think that if you were going to get rabies you would have already gotten it eairler if you didn't get all the shots. If you're that concerned, you can probably go and have a "titer" drawn at your doctors office. I'm not positive if it works for the rabies vaccine, although I assume it would. It does for most other vaccines. It's just a blood test. They will draw a little blood and check it to see if you have enough of the antibodies. If not, they will most likely start the series over. I work in the medical field, and I'm horrified of needles. I had to have the Hep B vaccine for my job. It took me 2 years to get the 3 shots. I kept leaving if they weren' tthere soon enough. I would chicken out. Anyway, I had my titer drawn and it was still ok. I'm guessing the rabies vaccine would be pretty similiar. In short, call your Dr. and they can probably have your mind at ease in 3 days. Stop making yourself crazy about it. That's the simple solution. you are fine maybe a little freaked out by the sounds of it....You would have died by now... |
