Isn't it possible to dedicate one day in a year as a Singapore No-Driving Day? |
It could an interesting gesture to have a to just rest the cars at home and take the public transport and ride bicycles on the streets. What do you think? If you are referring to the Car-Free Day, Singapore did launch its first Car-Free Day on 19th Apr 2001 - A call to local motorists to leave their vehicles behind and take public transport. But I think it was met with mixed feelings from the public. While many people welcome the idea of doing their bit for the environment, it really takes a concerted effort to have people reduce usage of cars and actually take some responsibility for our planet. I think majority of the population still need to get used to the idea. To them, having a car is convenient and it probably did not seem realistic to them to replace their cars with public transport and peddle-power (bicycle). Also, it did not help that prices of cars have gone down over the years and people are generally finding it easier to afford a car as compared to the past. I personally find the Car-Free Day meaningful as it helps to create public awareness of the need to minimise, if not prevent, pollution from cars. Hopefully when the future MRT projects fall into place, we'll have more and more people taking the public transport. Source(s): http://www.aas.com.sg/ The no-driving day is possible, perhaps on a public holiday eg. Labour day. However it has to be voluntary rather than a mandate as we may need the cars urgently, eg the police, ambulance or the mother who need to rush to the hospital for delivery. However we have to consider the livelihood of the taxi drivers and those who need to work in obscure areas like tuas where even buses are few. I think our no plastic bag movement is a relatively good campaign. I have started to use my own usable bag for shopping. Car in Singapore is most expensive in the world. Car owners had spend lot of money to owned their car, and they only can use it for 10 years, after 10 years, they need to buy COE again. Thus, to ask them to rest their cars at home is almost impossible. i personally dont think such a day will happen in singapore but however if the no plastic day can be materialised, it may happen in the future. |
