How do i paint the plastics on a street bike? |
i have a 2002 gsxr 750 i want 2 know like the basics 2 painting the plastics Most major paint producers have a line for motorcycle plastics. The paint is definitely different than the auto paints. They come in plastic bottles and they are as fluid as water. I guess there is a difference in flexibility after it hardens. We just painted a side fairing of a VFR 800 and it turned out perfect. The paint supplier which was as authorized dealer for Standox informed us that auto paints for metal surfaces will not work plastic bike parts. Same as sheet metal. Sand the old surface and spray a good primer...then the paint. It's very difficult after purchasing supplies and tools to make it look flawless it's basically not worth the time and effort. It's easier to buy the new plastic unfortunately. Riding a Gixxer 750 Rub it down and prepare it same as any other painted surface. ( Don't paint it right on top of top coat or laquer) Give it a coat or two etching primer ( important.) Then primer coats Then top coats/laquer. Just the same as painting your metal car except that you must remember the etching primer. PS. I got some great paint, primers, rubbing compound ( also good advice) from :- RS Bike Paints in Yorkshire (UK) http://www.motorbikepaint.co.uk/... I did the Plastics on my 2002 Foxeye Fazer. They were the only ones to supply that nice, but hard to match, Purple blue colour. They say that they can match any OEM bike colour. I can vouch for the quality of their paint and the girl on the phone is helful. Only one tip:- TAKE YOUR TIME. ( Let the bloody paint harden) Nick is pretty accurate, but don't use lacquer...Lacquer doesn't flex when the plastics bend, which will result in chipping. Use acrylic, which has a more rubberized or flexible finish coat. It will resist chipping at high speeds, in rain, and from accidents like wearing a belt, dropping keys, etc. I painted my 89 CBR600F. I bought it for $500 and then sold it for $1500. |
