Good street starter bike? |
just wondering if a person with no bike experience could start riding an older (98-) 600 sportsbike right away to start on. yes, as long as you respect the machine and don't get in over your head. it's like a pitbull, it'll bite if you yank it's chain. but if you take your time and treat it right, you shouldn't have a problem. The MSF course is a great idea no matter who you are, and will give you an idea about how you feel on a bike. If you're a decent sized guy and think you are responible enough for a 600(which judging by your name icedawg, I'm guessing you might not be), get a honda F2 or F3 Depends on how big you are, but I recommend about 250cc as a learner's bike. Light weight and easier to balance plus less horsepower to get you in trouble. a 125cc can be a rocketship, I had a 1980s yahama 350rd, those were street racers and I coulda died a few times on it. First bike? I suggest 350cc max, Honda made a good one, but then again,,1970 Triumph Bonne 650 is SHWEEET! Stay under 50hp for first bike. all he rest is just bling. Sandy's 50 hp limit is reasonable - I started with a 50 hp Honda and that's about as much as I felt comfortable riding right out of the MSF class. That's a training class where you go over a weekend and they provide the bike - I highly recommend that to anyone looking to begin. While there are some people who have survived starting on older 600's, often starting on a smaller bike will both help you learn to ride better and be a bit more relaxed. It's hard to enjoy riding if you are sweating from worry that you might accidentally wheelie it at a stoplight or having to be careful with the brakes all the time. A 500 cc or smaller sportbike is likely to be a lot more forgiving and predictable. And trust me, 500's have enough power for highway riding and just about any traffic situation you can reasonably expect to encounter - while being controlable enough to deal with the situations you DON'T reasonably expect to encounter but happen to run across anyway. Honda CB500 everytime. Easy to ride, forgiving, bullet proof and you won't grow out of it in 3 months like you would a 250. Sure. I started on a 650. It's not the bike, but the rider. The bike should fit you, and you should be comfortable on it. Take the MSF course, and pay attention. |
