Purchasing some bicycles in the near future?

My wife and I are going to purchase bikes for us in the near future. We really know nothing about bicycles, other than how to ride them, and was hoping someone could give us some good advice about brands and what to look for. We want them to last for a long time!

We'll mostly be riding paved streets/trails, but sometimes we may have a dirt trail we're on.

Can someone help?

go to your local bike shops and look/ask around
stay away from Walmart, Kmart, Sears, etc.

good brand names: KHS, Trek, Specialized, and Giant
bad brand names: Diamondback, Raleigh

plan on spending at least 400 to 500 dollars each for quality

call your local bicycle shop and see if there bikes are backed up, just like owning a car you need to take care of your bike

Your best option is to go to your local bike shops and tell them exactly what you told us. You will probably be looking at getting a bike that is commonly referred to a "hybrid" or "comfort" bike. These are used for recreational riders who are often on paved trails, but yet can go on smoother dirt trails. There are many, many, companies and manufacturers out there, but you definitely want to stay away from any chain retail store (Wal-Mart, Target, K-mart) and be wary of the big box sporting good stores (Better bikes, but poor service and assembly).
When you get your bike from a bike shop, they will make sure you get a bike that fits you correctly, and will also ensure that it is properly assembled. They will often also provide you with free tune ups and some free service, which if you want these bikes to last a long time, you will need it.
yea, local bike shops, and look for a deal, i got mine and with a bike purchase got 5yrs free tune ups/service and the guys are great that work there. if u see the names Cannondale, Trek, Specialized, Klein, Giant, Gary Fisher, yer in the right place.
