What is the best bike to start out on ? |
650 v-star ? 600 shadow ? what older bike should I look for? I dont have alot of money. I seen a few (very few) stars and shadows for around 3000. Thing is my Dad has a bike and I'd like to go riding with him soon. I've rode dirtbikes off and on for 18yrs. Been told on here that a 750 or bigger street bike would be to much bike for a first time owner. I'm 5'10" 210lbs. 30yrs. mechanic (cars, trucks, big trucks, heavy equipment) I can wrench it weld it and wire it. lol If you have dirt bike riding experience, you should be able to handle a bigger bike. It will take some time to get used to the added weight and power of the bigger bike, but you've already got the reflexes and basic riding skills. Also, if you want to ride with your dad, you should have a bike that has enough speed and power that you can keep up with him on the road. I would think that for someone of your height and weight, a good first road bike would be a midweight cruiser style bike, such as a Suzuki Intruder Volusia 800, A Kawasaki Vulcan 800 or Drifter 800, or a Honda Shadow 750. Any of these should be available on the used market in the $3-4K range or less, and have adequate power and road capabilities to keep up with whatever your dad is riding. Another option would be a Harley Sportster, but it will be a lot more expensive, for very little added benefit. Don't forget while you're shopping for your motorcycle, to save a bit of cash for a good quality helmet and riding gear. Ride Safe! Get a 454 LTD from the 90's or even the 80's. You love it, and once you get used to it, get something bigger. Only get a cruiser, the guy below me doesn't understand motorcycles. susuki gs500. I've taught a few people or hyosung GT250, pretty well same frame as gs50 Do NOT buy a cruiser, they have poor geometry that does not add to good safety or handling your a big guy...so am i...you need a big bike, take a safety course offered by triple A and hen you will be ready to ride the big boys bike! YAMAHA 120 get the biggest bike you can afford, they all handle about the same. don't waste time and money on a bike you will not enjoy after a few months. vtx1800 is a good one, value to size wise.. an older gold wing is a very good bike.. 40 yrs experience |
