What's the best street helmet? |
I'm new to motorcycle riding and am taking a MSF course in a couple of weeks. I'd like to know your opinions on what is the best helmet for every day street riding because I'll most likely buy a small street bike if I can pass the MSF course. Back in my scooter days (20 years ago), there was no helmet law so I've never been on a bike wearing a helmet and hope I don't find it too confining. Yeah, we were young and stupid back then. But, I'm willing to become accustomed to anything if it saves my little melon! Thoughts or suggestions??? Do yourself a favor. Go to the library and pick up the helmet issue of Motor Cyclist magazine. Every year they do a helmet blowout issue and give you stats on lots of helmets. I think I have a copy if you can't find one. On second thought, go to the link above provided by lepninja...that's it.... Second, go to a motorcycle shop and try some helmets on. Leave them on for awhile so you know if they leave any pressure spots - you don't want those at all. The best helmets aren't necessarily the most expensive, don't be fooled. Just because it says Shoei or Arai doesn't automatically mean it's the best..but it is going to be expensive (and don't flame me people, I wear a Shoei). Good for you for choosing to wear a helmet. Like I said, do your research, shop around,...oh, and look at ONLINE retailers to buy your helmet from. They are usually MUCH less expensive than buying them in the local cycle shop. I used dennis kirk (www.denniskirk.com) to buy 2 of my 3 helmets and I was always satisfied. Also, they'll beat any deal you've found by a buck if they carry the particular helmet you're looking for. Source(s): 13 years and 200,000 miles on my 2 bikes. There are alot of new brands these days, but I still think Bell makes the best & most comfortable helmets. Cheap helmets tend not to fit as well, and after a few hours of riding you want to scream. Good ones you can wear all day. ari shoei or arai are the 2 best and the most expensive. make sure to get a full face. modular helmets are great (that's the one with the flip up chin bar). don't neglect the rest of your body. just as important are the riding jacket, gloves and boots. more than 30 years of riding experience. current rides are kawi zx-14 and harley davidson roadking Get a flip up type where it is full face when you want it, and open face when not. Also get a white one. Black and dark helmets get real hot in traffic. |
