What dirt bikes are street legal? |
Just wondering what a dirt bike needs to be street legal for a kawasaki look up KE or KL then the number of cc's. different years they had different cc's. now i think you can get a 250 and a 650 new. there either called dual purpose or endro California? If so you need mirrors and the full set of lights for sure, and there are some emissions restrictions too. Also I thought there was a minimum displacement size, but I believe there are fifties running around on the roads so that might not be correct. http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/ohvdualreg.htm... In any state it needs to have been EPA tested and approved for on-highway use. Bikes need at least an evaporative emissions recovery system, usually a charcoal canister. DOT also checks for compliancy with items like mirrors, lights, horn, steel gas tank, reflectors, noise level, tires... In some states it has been possible to convert off-road only motorcycles to "dual-purpose", street legal status. Most often it is because the person at the department of motor vehicles does not fully understand the law and lets it slip through. Because of this, california had allowed until 2005 any "green sticker" (and all 2004 and earlier red sticker) bikes to be street licensed just to be fair to everyone. Things have been set in place to stop the practice. Also, the US government requires that all vehicle VIN numbers are first created and listed under the approval of DOT and their requirements include a "secret" system of coding the VIN so that fake ones will show up as errors at local DMV's and also whether or not the vehicle passes any of the required tests. A person's best bet is to buy a bike that has already slipped through the system (they can never take away street legal status if it has already been granted - yet) or one that a manufacturer has invested the expense of bringing it into compliance with the requirements. Often the case is that a manufacturer will only apply for "49 state" legality and not spoon for the additional expense of california testing, hence the lower selection of street legal dirt bikes in California. The drz 400 by Suzuki is a great dual purpose bike. You can buy a conversion kit for about $300 or wire it yourself for much less. A 50 state requirement is that the bike have a properly installed, street rated framazoid seal at the exhaust header. |
