Pre 1980s 2 stroke street bikes...best bang for the buck and why?

looking to grasp a blast from the past but which one and what are my choices?

Get a Yamaha RD. Not quite as quick as the Kawasakis, but better brakes and MUCH better handling.

The early (A & B) models came in 250 or 350cc versions. The only real differences are the barrels, pistons & heads ( 250s are 54x54mm, 350s 64x54 )

For the C-F the 350 became a 400 (different crank - bore & stroke 64x64mm) - and gained a fair bit of weight.

Avoid C & D, as they still have the point ignition - E or later s electronic ignition - and all early strokers are VERY fussy about ignition timing.

C&D have VERY heavy early cast wheels - the earlier ones have spokes, much better, and the later ones have better cast wheels.

The E and later ones have inferior brake calipers (the earlier round ones were made under licence to Girling, and are much better)

F&G are basically the same, and the fastest ones - but I think these are early 80s. they are the last of the air-cooled ones - the next in the family were the 350LC (liquid cooled).
you would have to go for the Kawasaki h2 750 or the Suzuki gt 750, both bikes had wicked power poor brakes and sad handling. but both were a hell of a lot of fun.
i had a 74 Kawasaki 750 for a while and had a ball with it.

They were a kick to ride. The stock suspension and brakes
weren't up to par with the power of some bikes like the H1 and H2 Kaws. The Yamaha RD-350 is a nice light bike. Keep in mind that 2 strokes do twice the work of a 4 stroke.
Far less moving parts, but good crank seals are a must.
I personally like Yamaha's and Husqvarna's. A lot of the bikes like this you will find are Enduros. I would buy something 250cc and up because they will more than pull their own weight. Expect to work on it a lot because engine durability is an issue. If I was to buy one to ride a Yamaha RT360 would be great.
POS RACER!!!!! Mechanic 11+years
Hi Nottie,

No bloody ids seems to know his onions.

I would have to go for the RD250 LC - reason being my bruv had one (Red/white) from new and at the time it was better than the cats pyjamas!

Infact, I have been keeping my eye on the (UK) papers for one as they are just about to fall into the "vintage" range - which means no tax and low insurance (and don't forget the big grin on the face comes as standard! )
