What makes a motorbike street legal? |
Can, say, a dirt bike be made street legal by adding blinker lights? Is there a way to make a dirt bike street legal? headlight, tail lights and blinkers make it street legal..oh and a license plate, so you'd have to get a registration for it if it was just an offroad bike they don't come with that.. I've done it before, depending where you live some states are cracking down if it's not a 4 stroke. I dunno whats involved in registering it, but typically a bike needs a horn, a headlight which is always on when the bike is running, a brake light and front and rear turn signals, a side kick stand and a speedometer to be street legal most places. There are plenty of "already" street legal dirt bikes (ussually called enduros) Headlight, tail light, brake light, turn signals, mirrors, horn, license plate and a light on the license plate. Headlight, tail light, blinkers and a license plate, mirrors and horn. You might want to also change the tires from nobby to a more smooth tire with treads. There is more than just turn signals to make a dirt bike, street legal. You need all of the same requirements as a street legal bike. A speedometer, turn signals, a street legal headlight, a brake light, a license plate holder, a light for the license plate. The bike needs to be able to be titled, so that a registration can be originated for it. But, by the time you put all of that stuff on it, it would be cheaper to just get a bike that is both on and off road ready. My neighbor pulled this off some years ago - a street KX250. Like the above, lights, mirrors, turn signals, title, plus upgrading your bikes electrical system to handle the new stuff - AND a sympathetic DMV inspector. The Highway Patrol may also require an inspection, and they're seldom fooled. An enduro type bike will save you a lot of grief and paperwork. Headlights, Taillights, Turn Indicators, Speedometer & Odometer, and that it meets emissions requirements. |
