Is it difficult to maneuver your bike on the streets?

I've considered biking to school (4 miles each way), but don't know how to ride a bike yet. Is it difficult to maneuver your bike on the streets? Would you recommend it at all?

Children have been cycling to school since bikes were invented. However, if you haven't learnt to ride yet, traffic might be an issue.

When I learnt to ride a motorcycle, your provisional licence was good for 2 years. People taking their tests after a year on the road did a lot better after qualifying, than people who did a weekend course (Weekend course + powerful mc = fatac.).. This is because of road sense. They get to know how to ride, rather than take a test. It is the same for cycles.

Here is what I would do. Learn to ride the bike in and around your local estate, using parks where possible. Once you have the basics, see if your school/local police, do a cycle safety test. These were a regular feature at my school. Basically it was a school lesson, run by the police, on how to ride on the roads. See if this happens locally.

If this is not available, learn on you local streets before doing the school run in rush hour.

Luck
Don't know your age, but if it is legal to ride your bike on sidewalks, that can be a help in busy areas.

I was riding a bike to school 1 mile in 6th grade.

Traffic can be a big issue.

you will need to wear a helmet and get lots of practice, so probably not till next fall.
I used to ride mine everywhere. I never had a problem.
Once you learn how to ride a bike, maneuvering on the streets is a breeze. Get a helmet for sure! And just be aware of traffic.
I would suggest that before riding on the road that you do some proficiency training. You will need to know quite a lot of primary road safety information which is probably published, like in the UK as a Highway code for cyclists. You can develop technical riding proficiency off the road by , for example setting up an obstacle course in a playground area.

Riding and manouvering a bike on a road is not difficult when you have basic skills and sufficient awareness of other users. It's all about safety really

Recommend it ? I certainly would! - but choose your routes on quieter roads even though it makes your journey a little longer.
