It's me again, according to the bike dealer i really should be looking at parts when i buy a bike...?

i actually really prefer the trek 7.2fx (because of its look), but the bike dealer said if you compare the 2 bikes the diamondback century is a much better bike because of the parts!! something about using metal and not plastic like the trek....i feel like if i buy the trek, i'm buying it because of the look...
p.s. thanks for all your answers!
p.p.s. how do i get myself be comfortable riding the bike on the street. its nerve racking because of horrible drivers and since i'm a novice. last but not least, where do i go to find bike paths or routes?

- you didn't mention the price difference, but in that range, a small difference in price can have a significant quality difference. Have you looked at the next Trek up in the model line?

- start by riding on quiet residential / back streets. Stay off the highways and main roads. Remember to follow the rules of the road, just like driving a car. More tips here:

- to find bike paths etc, check your local city / county / metro area parks websites, and also look for local cycling clubs and see if they have "regular" routes.
While you SHOULDN'T buy a bike on parts alone, I leave you with this...

FACTS:

Trek - http://www.mtbr.com/reviews/derailleur/p...

This is just for the parts - every Trek is assembled by a qualified and trained tech...

You can upgrade the parts later if the ride is as nice as you want, you can't upgrade the feel/ride!

**** Check with you local bike shop on some T-Shirt or touring kind of rides that will be a slower pace starting out, look at park and recreation departments for local parks that will be closed to commercial vehicles.

P.S. The FX series has been out for more than a couple of years and is NOTHING NEW. The line has simply expanded down into the entry level pricing!

Don't worry about parts. I have two treks, they are great bikes, I also had a diamondback they are nice also. I have a Lemond Carbon with a Shimano Dura-Ace derailleur ( $160) and a Trek with a Shimano 105 ($60) and I can never tell the difference in shifting in either of them and I have had them both for 4 years and no problems from either.
Bike stores are in business to make money. Try Google and look for bike clubs in your area you should be able to find help with selection.
As to your other question about riding on the roadways, you kind of get used to the cars but sometime still cringe when they get to close. And all the wonderful retards who feel so compelled to yell out "get on the sidewalk where you belong". Where would we be without them.....better off I guess . But anyway there is safety in numbers, riding with a group gives the tards in cars a larger object to see and if there are 50 people your odds are better you wont be the one hit.
Ride Safely, were all in this together.
