How can i make it better to ride my bike in the area that i live in? what are the rules of bike riding? |
i live in northern kentucky/cincinnati. covington to be more precise. my boss rides her bike and she told me of all the cities she has lived in this place was the worst towards bikers. she says many other cities have a lot more people riding bikes and people are more curtious to them. i rode my bike to work today for the first time and i had to go way out of the way and around because of the hill to get here doesnt have side walks. and it is very steep and curvy. how can i get the cities to provide more transportation routes for bikers and what are the rules or tips that should be followed when riding a bike in the street? do you ride against traffic or with it? any information will be helpful. thanks. I usually choose streets that are wider so that cars can pass easily. I prefer bike lanes and bike paths. Riding on sidewalk may not be legal so check your local laws. I ride with the traffic, riding against just feels odd. As for hills here in San Francisco, there are plenty of hills thats what give you the exercise, your bike should have gears to make a bit easier. Remember if you ride up the hill you get to go down on the way back. If you use your bike to commute you should get a front and rear light for at night. Use common sense like hand signals to tell others you are making a turn. Never pass a car on the right always on the left because they may not see you in their blind spot. Don't weave in and out of traffic. And of course always wear a helmet. Also its a good idea to get a bicycle bell. Optional stuff, bicycle tire repair kit in case of a flat. A bicycle lock is useful in two ways. One is of course when you lock it outside. The other is if something on your bike breaks, you can lock it somewhere and come back to get it later. Perhaps there is a bicycle coalition in your area and check with them. Have fun and ride safe. |
