What's the best bike to own if I want to ride 30 miles a day?

I am a 42 year-old female and will be riding the bike on paved streets and blacktops. What is the best type (and brand) of bike to own if I plan on riding 30 miles a day? Thanks.

That depends on the riding you will be doing.

Is this for a commute to and from work? If so, I recommend a hybrid, probably somewhat high end. It will be comfortable enough to keep riding even in crappy weather, have tough yet lightweight wheels and tires, Wider gear ranges for those days when your just plain dragging *ss, plus have the option of attaching racks for your change of clothes, laptop computer, lunch, etc.

If this is for a fitness program, you'll need an entry level road racing bike. One that is lightweight, yet comfortable, and more efficient than the hybrid. It will not have the gear range of the hybrid, but you won't be carrying all that extra weight.

As far as brands and models are concerned, there are just too many to list. Trek, Giant, and Specialized all offer a full range of low -end hybrids to high-end racers. CAnnondale has a more limited selection, though their bikes are of the highest quality.
I always hate it when people ask questions with questions. :) But, you're asking a very open ended question. In my opinion, in order to answer your question accurately, we would need more information. A bicycle is almost like a pair of shoes, there are many types, but in order to get a good fit, we would need to know more information. How big are your feet? How fast do you want to walk/run? and many others. I would recommend you go to a bike shop and they'll be able to point you in the right direction, but make sure it's a reputable one so you're not buying more than you need.

Thanks,
Merlin
it depends on how much you are willing to spend. If you are only riding on roads for 30 odd miles then i would go for a hybrid, tourer or racer made by scott, specialized or claud butler
If you are going to use this for a recreational bike, I would look at a lower end road bike. Some good lower end road bikes include but are not limited to the Specilized Allez series, or the Trek 1000's series.

If this is going to be a commuting bike then a hybrid bike, that is a bike that combines elements of road bikes, and mountain bikes to make the ride on pavement easier but more comfortable. Hybrid bikes also offer the ability of adding a rack for easy transportation of smaller equipment such as books, briefcases or other smaller items. Some of the best hybrid bicycles are Trek again.
