Bike size?

Bigger wheels on a bicycle means faster speed right?. However, I've seen some ppl on small BMW 20 inch bikes tearing up the streets...so does size really matter?

Size matters because you have to fitted to that bike. Don't think Lance Armstrong rides a 700x25c because it's fast no it's because the bike has to fit exactly to you. If not the pain would be enormous and might also injure you with broken knees, back troubles or worse, or might have troubles sitting down in a chair(Saddle sores are more common in improperly fitted bikes). Also you have to remember that BMX bikes are single speed or fixie . Of course their fast but the kids that ride them look at my bike and think "How do you get on that bike it's looks to big for me"! I tell them it's not that big if you are properly fitted. The couldn't believe what they had seen a big guy climb aboard a big wheeled trike. There are many differing opinions on wheel sizing versus speed. Dr Alex Moulton design a bike which was released in 1962. That offered small wheels and was as quick if not quicker than the other offerings of the day.

There are many that believe that smaller wheels are actually better than larger ones. There are certainly some advantages. Smaller wheels are lighter and will accelerate faster. They are also stronger and don't flex as much.

In terms of rolling resistance there isn't much in it. A small wider slick tyre can almost match a high end 700c tyre for rolling resistance.

In terms of wind resistance there isn't that much in it either. The smaller wider wheels present a similar frontal area to the 22 x 700c wheels.

There is a bit more info on this subject in this article.

The biggest problem with the smaller wheels is gearing. To match the gearing of a standard road bike the small wheeled cousin needs to use either much larger chain wheels or smaller sprocket on the cassettes. Shimano make a small wheel hub called the Capero. This enables a nine tooth sprocket to be used. There are larger power losses using a nine tooth cog and more wear. This is why many manufacturers of small wheeled bikes opt for the larger chain wheels. Counts in excess of sixty teeth are not that uncommon.

In my opinion the smaller wheeled bikes are a tad slower (only a tad). The big advantages are that they can be made lighter and are easier to transport. Many fold up or come apart.

If you are keen on small wheeled bikes go for it. If you are a good rider you will pass many standard sized bikes. The looks of disbelief are priceless

Here are just a few manufactures of bicycles with small wheels. (none of these are bmx)
