I want a motocross bike to ride on streets. Is that legal nd possible?!?!? |
I'am 16, a student, but when I turn 18, I will take a bike. My dream is to hav a motocross bike. Is my dream possible nd if yes, then whats the best choice. To import one or to modify one. Dual sport is the way to go. I wanted a dirtbike to take to the sand dunes but I figured I'd be able to ride it more if I could use it on the streets. I got a Kawasaki KLR650 and love it. I hardly ever take it off-road but I ride it all over on the road. It's just as capable on the highway at 70mph as it is on the dirt. It is a lot bigger than a standard dirtbike so if you want something with that look and feel you'll probably want to go smaller - maybe something like the Suzuki DRZ400 it is legal as long as you have a licence plate on it. I have heard it is illegal to ride them on city streets, but the laws could be different now, and depending on where you live. It sounds like a lot of fun. yes it is possible to turn a motorcross bike into a street legal bike first thing you need to do is have turn signales put on,street tires and also plate and take it to a mechanic to make sure it pass inspection also make sure you have a legal exhaust Pretty much any dealer that sells motocross bikes sells street kits it comes with blinkers and certain lights you need and then just register it and it is legal for the road I assume you don't live in the US since you mentioned importing one. I don't know what the laws would be where you live but check with whatever governing body is over that. If you are in the Us obviously that would the DMV. It really wouldn't be a very practical thing to do. To have a light and horn on your bike you need a battery and electrical system to operate them. You would also need a brake light so you are looking at replacing the rear fender or trying to retro fit one to the existing fender. The motocross tires would not be street legal so you would be buying new tires. By the time you've done all of this you could have probably bought a cheap used road bike, plus you've basically rendered the MX bike useless for the track. What you could do instead is buy what the manufacturers call an "off road" bike. The Yamaha WR, Honda CRF-X, KTM XC and XCW. These bikes are interned more for hare scrambles and enduro. These bikes are basically street legal as far as I know. Bottom line...find out what the bike needs to be street legal and then start talking to dealers or reading the specs from the manufacturers website. Why dont you just look around and find a nice dual purpose so you dont have any issues riding it on the street, they have turn signal horns headlight all the necessary item and the can go on the offroad as well. thats my plan so i can take the trails and the streets on the same bike. |
