How to cut a bike seat tube? Not the seat post.? |
I have a Grossman bike, and my seat tube is abit high. As i am riding street, i need it to be lower. I've put my seat post all the way down but still, when i'm riding, it feels as though im riding a Xcountry bike. Need help guiding how to cut the seat tube. Should i? A grossman is a nice ride ... why wreck it? Can you sell the one you have and buy a trial style frame? It is considerably shorter than the FDT styles. Personally I would do my best to never cut a frame, but that being said here goes ... 1.) If you are looking at selling the frame ever, then, no. Buy one that fits and is shorter. 2.) Make sure the seat post is not hanging up part way down and that you are actually able to put it as low as possible. 3.) Since you are street, I assume you are not sitting but rarely between trix or attempts, have you tried a low profile seat? Some of the trials style seats have very little pad, are much smaller and sit lower on the post. 4.) If you only intend to do street and it is your frame for life, then go ahead (CAREfULLY). If the seat tube is tapered, you may need to shim it for snugness when done. Aluminum can strips work awesome for this. Again, make sure first that your seat post actually goes all the way down and is not stopped inside the seat tube. If the seat tube protrudes above the toptube too far (and the seatpost is not the issue), you can cut it off square with a hacksaw leaving at a minimum 1" of tube above the toptube. Make sure to dress the inside and outside of the cut when done with a round file and emery. Then cut a slot (easy with a dremel tool) in the backside of the seat tube. Make it at least 3/4". This will allow enuf room for the clamp. Go slow and try not to overheat the tubing as this will weaken it more. Measure three times and cut only once. If when you measure it, and you estimate it is still too tall ... then I would say your frame is too big for you. Good luck! Most seat tubes are thicker in the area around the clamp than they are towards the center of the tube. Cutting the top portion off will make it impossible to tighten the seat post clamp. On top of that, you'd have to reslot the tube so the clamp would work and just cutting it with a saw to do it will not work. If it feels weird when riding an mtb on the road, there is a reason... it's because the bike was designed to play in the dirt and stay off the road. 27 years in the industry Why do you want your saddle lower? Are you doing BMX or trials? Usually, on road you would want your saddle higher than for mountain bikes. Regarding doing what you say, I think it will be a bad idea to do it. If you really want to lower your seat beyond what it's possible, I would really think it's a very bad fitting frame you have for you. Like having and XL frame when you're like, say, 5'2". Get a pro wrench to do the dirty technical work someone with experience working with bmx type bikes. Good luck! 25 Years Experience |
