What is the best way to teach children to ride a bike ?Are there any classes offered for this anywhere?

When a child has very low self confidence, and a little scared of going on the street on her own, what is the best way to teach her to ride bike?

Talk to the child and tell them that you expect them to learn to ride a bike.Tell them that it is important to you and them to learn.Let that sink in for a while,go get them a Coke.Let them absorb things.
When you have waited long enough, have them sit on the bike seat and hold it steady for them.Do not let go and let them fall.
When the time is right tell them that you are going to hold them up and push from behind:assure them that they will not fall.
Go ahead and do it.Do that part until the child can see that it is doable.
Begin to let go of the seat for a second or two and do not tell them that you have.Always gain control of the seat after that and make sure that they do not fall.
Keep doing that and let go for longer periods of time.
At some point tell them that you are not holding them up,they are doing it themselves.
(That presumes that they have learned to pedal,do not forget that part.)
Grab the seat to make sure that they do not fall over.
Then tell them that you are going to let go and let them cover a few feet:but that you are not going to reveal when you are not holding on.
Let them know that you have not abandoned them but are able to grab hold at any time.
Comfort them with Cokes and what not--and tell them that you are so proud of them for trying.
Keep it up and they will be riding in a couple of weeks.
dont make them
i say u teach them
i hated the thought of riding bikes cos i was scared of falling off
my parents taught me and i feel it was very beneficial because i didnt have a stranger guiding me
if they have low self conf they're better off being taught by someone close and whom they trust than u sending them to classes
Start with a tricycle, then move on to training wheels, and then gradually remove the training wheels. Plus, she's probably scared to ride on the street on her own because she's away from you. So what you need to do is go bike riding with her until she gets comfortable. Riding a two-wheeled thing that can tip over can be scary for any child, you just have to gradually make it easy from point a to point b.
i remember when i was being taught how to ride a bike... my parents took me to a very flat area and had me pedal for a little bit with them holding the back of my seat. after a while the slowly let go without me noticing and i was doing it all by myself...after that i just had to keep practicing
Its a long time ago, but I remember my Dad taught me by getting me to sit on the bike at first while he stood in front, holding on to the handlebars. He told me how everything worked and made sure I knew what the levers and things did. He also adjusted the bike to fit me properly and told me when this was so, so I had confidence in the bike.

Next we went into the park and he got me pedalling on grass. He kept me upright and maintained my confidence by running along slightly behind me, holding the back of my saddle.

Every now and then he'd let go of the saddle briefly and tell me I was riding. Then he'd grab it again before I panicked. We did this until I was riding on my own more and more. By now I was riding on road rather than grass. Soon I knew I could stay upright without his help - I still remember that moment with great clarity - it was really important to me.

So the process was more to do with trust than it was to do with learning to balance - the balancing came naturally.
