Harley Sporster VS Dyna Street Bob?

I'm planning to buy a new motorcycle this month. I have decided on Harley-Davidson, not because I'm buying a name, but because I want quality AND looks. I seriously checked into the Yamaha V-Star line up and after looking at some on the showroom floor, I just didn't see the quality compared to the H-Ds.

I really want the new Dyna Street Bob, it looks great and has a 88 c.i. engine. But considering the price, I could go with a used (2001-2004) Sportster 1200 with much lower payments.

I know you gotta pay to play, but what advantages does the Sportster have over the big bikes? Everyone says as soon as I get a Sportster I'll want a bigger bike. Can a Sportster be modified to run with the big dogs?

The 1200 Sportster is a vast improvement over the 883, but in my opinion is still just a ploy to get buyers on a different HD. They're too tall and short. They don't handle, they'll vibrate your teeth out and, like all Harleys, are under powered.

If you didn't see quality in the VStar lineup its because you already made up your mind to by HD.

I think you ought to join the 21st century. Get a liquid cooled big twin that makes serious horsepower right out of the box.

Or, better yet, get a low-mileage Honda Valkyrie and ride a real power cruiser. You can always clean a Harley off of the radiator screen, if you still want one.
the question was about harleys, not cheap jap-crap clones!!!!

Buy a Honda or a Yamaha鈥?and you'll loose time and money if you're looking for a pure, real and legendary motorcycle! I owned a 883 for 2 years and just got a 96ci Street-Bob, and鈥?life is really great on those bikes!

First off, the Yamaha V-Star is an excellent machine. I know several people who swear by them. But Harley is still the measuring stick all others are compared to.

The 1200 Sportster is a good choice, and it's advantages over larger Harleys is that it's easier to handle in traffic on city streets, although it's still a great highway bike, too. And yes, not only can it be made to "run with the big dogs", but it already does because of it's power and lighter weight.

If the majority of your riding is on the open highway, I'd go for the larger Harley. It will be more comfortable on you in the long run. If not, then the Sportster is the way to go. Enjoy your ride, dude!
Either is a great choice, I used to ride metric cruisers before I too discovered the qualities of American iron. I tried all the jap hd-wanna-bes and found that there is nothing else that feels the same as the real deal. Are they fast? no are they cheap? no... what they are is SOLID, easy to repair, easy to customize and just a pure joy to ride.

There is a reason that ALL the jap cruisers are trying to imitate the HD... get the original, you will not be dissapointed.

The newer sporty's, 04 and up, are a vast improvement over their older brothers, but are still a bit short and tall as pointed out. I think the Bob is kinda nifty, but *no offense* it's a girls bike, no rear seat, no back pegs, very low saddle ht.

You need to decide what it is you are going to do with your bike, is it an every day highway commuter? then you might look at the touring bikes, is weekend toy? then you really can not beat a Wide Glide for tearing up the country-side, is it for show? putt around for a couple hours a month, then park it in the front yard and wash it once a week? Then get a softtail..

IMO The best deal in the inventory is the Electraglide Standard, you can usually find them used VERY reasonably too.
