Is a 250 Ninja or dirt bike a better beginner's bike? |
On the streets, which is better? I imagine a dirt bike will be easier to handle and much lighter but can they be ridden on the streets? Won't there be a lot of tire wear? Can they both attain highway speeds (75-80 mph)? There are dual purpose bikes, that are road legal, but why? If all you want is to ride it on the road, then buy a street bike. As to your question, the 250 Ninja is an excellent bike. My wife has one. I do not like it as I am uncomfortable, but I have been reared ended twice and have residual pain in my neck and back. I would feel this way with any crotch rocket, because of the position you are in; bent over the tank, looking up with your neck craned, and a lot of your weight on your hands. None the less, the bike is a good one. It is quick, and nimble. It can get up to 105 MPH, so is quite capable of highway speeds, however, it is very light so you will get buffeted around in windy conditions. This would be true of any small light bike, even more so on a dual purpose bike as they generally have you at a much higher seat position. My bride gets between 75 and 85 mpg, combined city/ highway. She is a Pet Nanny, so she is on the thing every day, and loves it. Incidentally she is not a novice rider, many years experience, and is quite happy with the bike, so I would not think of it as a "starter bike"! The Ninja is a good bike, is qiuck and handles very well. In my opinion, there is no contest to which you should have, unless you have another reason to need an off road bike, like you live on a huge farm or a Texas sized ranch. Then you may be better off having a dual purpose motorcycle. Otherwise, stick with the Ninja EX250. Happy Biking! some dirt bikes are street legal...a Ninja has more power, I wouldn't recommend a Ninja for a starter cycle. Check out some of the dirt bike models, or maybe a road bike like the Harley-Davidson Sportster. check the paper, and test ride some bikes. Yamaha made a nice 450 cc road bike called the Night Hawk, nice bike...if you can find a used one, that makes a great starter bike. Dirt bikes are not street legal - I assume you mean an ENDURO which has headlight taillight blinkers and a horn That will be easy to ride for a beginner But about the same as a 250R ninja I assume you mean a Dual-purpose bike, and not just a dirt bike. Dual-purpose is both on and off road legal, but basically the same handling as a dirt bike. I like the Dual-pupose because it feels more like a bicycle, but you will feel more power and handling at high speeds from a sport bike (and they look better in my opinion). Dual-purpose may also feel better because you are more upright. Either one, you are going to out grow in 6 months so don't spend too much and buy used. Both will hit 75-80 mph at extremely high RPMs. The dirt bike is better for beginners, because if (read: when) you drop it, it won't scuff up all the plastic that the ninja has on it. You can get a variety of different tires for dirt bikes, including 'trials tread' which are good for on or off road. Or you can get full blown onroad tires. As far as riding on the highway - you should wait until you are a little more experienced, and get something bigger. The ninja might be able to handle it - but it will get ragged out pretty quick riding at 75mph. |
