Question about bikes?

Thinking of getting a street bike, never ridden on pavement before, lots of dirt bike riding though, what would be the best overall bike to learn on? I only want the crotch rockets, no choppers.

Since you've had bike experience, I'd suggest any of the 600cc bikes. CBR600, R6, ZX-6R, KATANA, etc. These bikes have plenty of power, but are still suitable for the intermediate rider. And they seem to have a decent resale value (unless it's wrecked of course). So, later on when you want to get a bigger bike, you can recover a nice amount of your investment.

The 600cc class pretty much performs similarly, so it's basically a matter of what is comfortable to you and what type of look you prefer.

My preference is Japanese, but BMW, Ducati & Triumph make some very good bikes also.

And the MSF class is a good suggestion. It's a quick class (2 - 3 days) and (at least where I live...Wyoming) it's very inexpensive ($15).

Harley makes some pretty nice (dependable & classy) street bikes. I guess the biggest thing is determining what you like hearing (exhaust sounds). The second would be if you are planning on having a friend ride with you, seat comfort.
My second round would be for a Honda if the Harley is out of your price range. You want to look at dependability and availability of repair sites. Good luck.
You should take the MSF course. (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) Any bike shop can put you in touch with a course, or call your DMV, as they will know also. Even though you know how to ride, they'll teach you the correct way to ride on the street. I learned how to ride on dirt, also, but I took the advanced course several years ago. I'd probably been riding for 10 years when I took it, and still learned from it. FYI.... I've been riding for 26 years, always on my own bike, so I do know what I'm talking about.
I would reccommend getting a bike you are comfortable with, as in comfortable with the cc's and with the "fit" of the bike.
600cc is a good bike to start with any make/modle.. just find one you like
