Questions on Sport bikes. Beginer?

So.. My mom would not let me get a street bike. So.. Thursday I turn 18. So no more "can't get one" from my mom.
So I want to get a sport, street like. I would like to stay with yamaha. Such as R1 or R6. I have $5,500 to spend.
With that much can I get a bike? maybe alittle older. and yeah.
Also anything I should know about these bikes?

you could get a nice r1 or r6 for that price. Probably around 2005 or older but you could get lucky and get a newer one also. Good Luck
GSXR 660's are some of the nicest bikes out. You can also get small 250's for really cheap, but they don't really have the guts you want in a street bike.
a crotch rocket is a dangerous ride, you should have a few years of riding first, they can get out of control in a heartbeat, try a older yamaha or suzuki but not over 750 cc yet, you can get alot of bike for the money you mentioned-make sure you get a good helmet , your mom is right,
Would you like to learn to ride well? After you move out from under you Mom's roof, take at least a year to learn to ride on a more suitable bike. Such as a Suzuki DR 400 or a SV650. Then graduate to a R6 after you have taken a couple of classes at the track and have about 20,000 miles under your belt. You will be a faster, smoother rider than anyone that started with a bike that really few mortals can even properly ride.
Well, since you seem to have quite a bit of offroading experience (I was going to say the ninja 250, but you will tire of it rather quickly) what about a ninja 500. I would hold off on an R1 or R6 until you get more street experience, plus, those bikes are insanely powerful (especially the R1) you can get in trouble real fast on one of those.

Everyone is correct about the Street Bikes having a lot of power! I have a 2005 Honda CBR 600RR and I have friends that have R1's and the R6! These pocket rockets are fast and I have heard of to many beginners going out and buying them without any experience and then wrecking them. These bikes have so much power and can get away from you in a heartbeat! I wouldn't advise you getting one until you have a few years of riding under your belt!
