So which bikes are lighter and which ones are for street? how do you tell? in terms of weight .. a Carbon material would be the lightest of all, Aluminium would be second, followed closely by Ti, as people think that titanum is lighter infact its heavier than the latest Alu bikes. but titanium are far stiffer and last longer than both material mentioned (not forgetting, NO maintainence needed) but CARBON is the lightest for sure. check out Scott CR1 its illegal to be so light. Source(s): http://www.smartcycles.com/frame_materia... the lightest bikes are carbon fiber and titanium. any bike can be ridden on the street just depends on what you want to get out of it. Titanium bikes are usually the lightest followed closely by carbon fiber, but both have igh price tags. Aluminum alloy are the next lightest, which is what many bikes are nowadays. Of aluminum bikes, road bicycles are lighter than mountain and hybrid. Any bicycle can be used for on road, the difference is which ones are better/faster for road riding and that not all can be used for off-rode. Road specific bicycles usually have smooth narrow tires and drop bars. If you want a bicycle that can also do other things hybrids, with slightly wider tires, are usually a good in between. The lightest bikes are owned by the guys with the fattest wallets and no common sense ....as for titanium being stiff ???? its a memory metal (like a spring) its a way softer ride than aluminum over time it work hardens where do you people get these ideas? As for being able to tell which bikes are lightest and which are for street look at the rider if they look like a fruitcake chances are its a really light street bike carbon frame bikes are the lightest ever, but not neccessarily the strongest- they will crack under enough stress and it costs a fortune (around $2k-5k per frame!) Titanium is the next step down but still costs a rediculous amount of $$. aluminum is the standard these days- lightweight, strong, and durable. if you want a light mountain bike for street use (im assuming thats what your looking for) get somthing with no rear suspension, small frame, and low travel fork. thick tires and super wide rims give more traction for jumping obstacles. |
