Ninja 650 for a new rider? |
I am 5'8" and weigh 140. I am looking into getting a street bike and I was going to go small for my first bike but I dont want to have to get a new one in a few months to a year because ive grown out of the small one. I was looking at the Ninja 650. I was wondering if this would be to big or what? Any tips? Get a 500. You will die on a 650. You will outgrow a 250 in 6 months. it will be really dangerous first take the MSF class www.msf-usa.org it will give you lots of experience, and may change your mind on the initial leaner bike. Buy the learner bike you will ride and learn, not 'grow into'. I am 5'6", weigh 165, and love the Ninja 250. It'll run 100mph+ easy to park, inexpensive to insure, and fun to ride. (I also own 7 other bikes, ranging from 80 to 1385cc) You can buy a 250 brand spanking new for $3000 and sell it for $2500 6 months from now. Also consider the EX 500, or the suzuki SV650 the Ninja 650 is a nice second bike. The Ninja 650 is bigger and faster than a 250 but not terribly so. The engine is designed for low end torque - basically power at street legal speeds. You'll have a pretty easy time in traffic with it, but it won't go 150mph with the other 600s. The seat is pretty low, and the handle bars are higher than on other sport bikes and newbie (and back) friendly. I don't really see how you're going to "grow out" of a 650, unless you go to the track or break speeding laws regularly. Almost bought a Ninja 650 a ninja 250 can easily kill u as a ninja 500. it isnt so much as what u hit, its how hard u hit it. and i hate to tell ya, but at legal freeway speeds (65-75 depending on state), u will slide with enough impact force that u will either: die, be paralyzed, or require a closed casket because u didnt have any gear on. why in the name of christ do squids keep thinking they will 'outgrow' a bike just because its a 250? are u in that much of a hurry to die? I weighed around 140 when I started riding, many years ago. The 650 is significantly faster than the 250. I started on a 250 and went to a zx6r after a friend of my brother totaled the 250 for me. The 250 is an excellent starter bike, handled amazingly well, was light weight, cheap to insure and got great mileage. Its everything a beginner bike should be. At 6500' elevation it would top at about 110mph, but it took a while to get there. The best thing about it, is I learned how to ride and maintain speed even around hard corners. The 6r on the other hand would walk on you if you weren't careful. By 'walk on you' I mean you end up on your back with 500lbs of bike sitting on your chest. It would top out around 155-163 depending on the day and the track. Anyone who says you need a 600cc machine as a beginners bike is 1. stupid and 2. a squid. They are easily ID'd around town as the guys who haul butt in the straight line, and then all but get off the bike and push it around a corner. All they ever learned was how to work the throttle, the rest of the riding experience is a mystery. They are also the guys selling a wrecked bike every 8 months. |
