Motorcycle question!! How many miles can you put on an engine before it needs to be rebuilt?"?

I'm new to the street bike thing, I'm looking at purchasing a 2003 Honda Shadow, has 27K miles on it, looks to be well maintained.. is this bike considered worn out and in need of rebuilding or can I put thousands of miles on it with no worries?

The answer to your question is "there is no answer". Actually depending on the riding style and up keep of the previous owner it could be in almost new shape (ask to see maintenance logs). Or it could look good and the internals could be fried. Just to let you know, I have an 84 VT700C shadow that I bought new. It now has 125,000 miles on it and is still running strong (it has never been rebuilt). At that age and mileage I have had to replace many items such as the stator, many cables and switches, speedo gear box, ect... you get the hint. Although I don't ride it much anymore as I have newer bikes I still service it twice a year and start it twice a month for a short ride (it is harder on a bike to sit than to be ridden).

Best bet is check it out good, check the oil for filings, check under for oil leaks, run a compression test, look at cable ends for fraying, ect... If you are unsure of these things you can find someone that knows bikes and take them with to check it out. Often it is a good idea to do that anyway because your desire to own it can sometimes overshadow the problems and you won't notice them until later. Source(s): Just an old biker
No one answer. If the bike has had regular oil changes and reasonable maintenance (valves adjusted, etc.) 27K is still young. If it's been ridden by someone that hasn't taken care of it, 27K can be pretty old. I just rebuilt a Yamaha YZF600 with 26K on it (bad transmission), but the engine looked perfect inside, cylinders still had the cross hatch on them, no grooves. Generally, Hondas are good machines. I've owned two of the V-4 engines and they are very reliable and economical. Good luck.

27K is a lot of miles for an '03 motorcycle, sounds like it was ridden almost every day. Make sure you check the tires, chain, and fork seals closely.
This question is kind of hard to answer but if the bike has been well maintained and still runs good I would not rebuild it. Since you are talking about a Honda you shouldn't have to worry about it for a long long time. I have seen Honda's that have more miles on them than most cars in the junkyard and still running strong. 27,000 Miles for a Honda is just breaking it in.
There are a few things that you will want to check out though before buying it. Look at the tires on the bike. Usually the tires on bike are only good for a season or two depending on how it is ridden etc... and it would be a good idea to check out the drive line and brakes. Check for leaking hoses etc... and check the fluids. If you are buying the bike from a dealer they generally do this for you but if it is from a private seller it is better to look before buying just to be sure. Hope I have been helpful
if bike has been serviced regularly.e. oil changed, spark plugs changed, cam chain tensioned regular, tappets adjusted regular, air &oil filter changed,if all the above have been done regularly as in manufacturers service book,it shouldnt need to be rebuilt.Look out for top end rattles, black smoke out of exhaust, bottom end rumbles....walk away if any of these symptoms arise..
Well it depends how it was ridden and how well it was tooken car of.But I hear of a bike having 80,000 miles on it before it was rebuilt.(gs1000e 1978}.
With no abuse and regular maintenance, I've seen street bikes get up to 50k. That doesn't include tires, brakes, clutch, chain & sprockets and fork seals.
