Why not choose a MX helmet for streetbike use? |
I very much prefer the ventilation aspects of the MX helmets over those of the street bike helmets any day, though I do own an Icon mainframe helmet, I am considering buying another for in-town use as I live in the hell that is Las Vegas. I believe the State of Nevada requires a DOT approved helmet for street use. While some MX helmets are DOT approved, not all of them are. For hot weather riding, I like a 1/2 helmet like the Bell Shorty, or the HJC AC-2 (shown in the links below.) It's not as good as a full face helmet for protection, but when the temperature is hovering on the high side of 100 degrees outside, it's much more comfortable to wear, and it's DOT approved for street use! Don't forget your water bottles! Source(s): http://www.helmetoutletusa.com/index.cgi... http://www.helmetoutletusa.com/index.cgi... You can use one, I did for years, but the Street helmets typically offer better protection and the face shields are nice too... with all the open space in the helmet if your going real fast it can be annoying as hell and they arent aerodynamic as a good street helmet You can wear a MX helmet to ride a street bike, but im sure when you pull down-town vegas, some hottie will chuckle at the fact your riding a street bike with a dirt bike helmet. Believe it or not they know haha Other than looking dorky, the biggest drawback is that MX helmets are not designed to be slippery in the air. This means you get a lot of wind noise at any speed at all. Also, since MX helmets are designed to be worn with goggles, you might find that the goggles themselves are more of a pain than the helmet in a hot climate. Myself, I use a "flip face" Nolan N-1 helmet, and when the weather is real hot and I'm stuck in traffic, I just leave the chinbar up. Then, when I start moving again, I just flip it down and enjoy the quiet. While flip face helmets are not quite as protective as an integral full-face, they are far more protective than an open face helmet. Just my .02 Ameribucks (that's 2% of a cartwheel). I would wear a street helment for the added protection.Because the people in cars really dont pay any attetion to motorcycles. |
