Is It Safe to Cross a London Street??????????????? |
Ecology has had both a good and a bad effect on our attitude toward the environment. Many of us now travel by bike and/or motorbike; and whilst this is great for the plants and the trees, not to mention the humans, it also has a perilous side. The fact is there is little or no provision for bikes and motorbikes. London has no bike lanes and thus the bikers dart in and out often appearing from nowhere. Sure the lights are red and so you can cross. But did you look to see for bikers? And have you kept looking??? I know that when I was lecturing at Cambridge, I learned to be bike-weary; and happily for the duration I never experienced any casualty. Others did. It is much, much worse in London as bikers and motorcyclists appear to operate without any concern for speed limits; stop signs and/or bike lanes. I think this situation should rapidly be remedied as the numbers of bikers have swelled on account of mass immigration of EU nationals. No, you're right, it's not safe to cross the street. That's why most Londoners live and work on the same block, so they never have to cross a road. Causes problems when you need to go shopping or start a relationship, but if you use foresight when buying a property and choosing a job, and select a suitably large block to live/work in, then there should be plenty of retailers and enough choice of potential mates. London and everywhere else, government wish to us to be eco-friendly, when they are not themselves, and are not exactly helping. England has always had terrible public transport systems, they seriously need to be changed. What's your point? Why does everyone think that yahoo answers is a political forum? Do you really think anything will get accomplished here? Get off your bum and go paint those bike lanes yourself! "London has no bike lanes" I see your problem.... you are driving in london WITH YOUR EYES SHUT. there are bicycle lanes all over the place in and around London. If mayor ken had his way, we would all be on bikes. I live in London. There are LOADS of cycle lanes! The fact that cyclists totally ignore them is another problem. look both ways and don't expect everyone else to look out for you No more dangerous than anywhere else. Just remember to look>listen>and look again before crossing. Elementary stuff really. |
