I have a shwinn 21 speed / mountain bike-can i change it to 26 speed if so HOW ??? |
need the lower gear for mountains / higher for street&paved trails.We have some awsome trails & paths here in ft collns , Colorado.tanks for info. -Hey, looks like your running the older 7 speed (21 gears) groupo. Anyway, like the previous answered said, you would have to change out almost all of your drivetrain to change over to a 8 speed (24 gears) or a 9 speed (27 gears). Your other option is to find a Shimano 7 speed "Mega Gear" cassette. The highest (11 teeth) to lowest first 6 gears are like your standard cassette, but the lowest gear is a 34 tooth which is used on the most of the new 9 speed cassettes. This will give you a really low gear to climb most steep hills in Colorado. -You might have to change your rear derailer to a long cage (SGS type), because some derailers can't handle the 34 tooth low gear. Anyway, hope this helps. You'd need to change out the following: 1) chain 2) cassette 3) shifters 4) both derailleurs 5) rear wheel as the 7 speed cassette body is too short to handle the 8 or 9 speed cassette 6) crank if you go to a 9 speed as the chain is narrower 7) possibly the bottom bracket unless you get a crank that matches the existing one (most of the newer stuff is a splined spindle now and the square taper is fading out) No, you can't change to 26 gears. You'll need to choose either 24 or 27 instead. It will take a lot of work and a lot of money.. probably as much as a new bike with the gears you want. You'll need to do the following: 1) Purchase new shifters, derailleurs; 2) Have a bike shop spread the rear of the bike to allow a wider rear wheel (if the frame is aluminum it can't be done); 3) Purchase a new rear wheel or rebuild your existing one; 4) Purchase new freewheel/cassette for the rear wheel and a new chain; 5) Put it all together.
