What dual sport motorcycle do you recomend I get ($3500 to $6000)?

I'm new to motorcycles but am sure I am going to get one in the near future. I just haven't deceded for sure which one. Any suggestions? I have really been looking at the Suzuki dr-z400s but I'm open to other ideas if anyone knows of a good street legal dirt bike with decent mpg. I don't want any smaller than a 350 cc. It has to be able to take fairly big jumps and lots of trail riding abuse.

Thanks for your help! All enties are appreciated!

the DRZ400 is a very good choice, and if you need a bit more horsepower, the Honda XR650L and Kawasaki KLR650 are both very good & reliable bikes. then there is the KTM 525 EXC, which was made as street legal in 2007, or the next step up is the KTM Adventure 640.

but if you want the best of dirt that is street legal, I would highly recommend the KTM 525 EXC (not sure you will find in your price range though), as it is probably the lightest weight, most power/weight ratio, high performance suspension of any of the others listed... my next choice for the more dirt oriented would be the XR650L, then the Suzuki DRZ, then the KLR650 (but it's pretty heavy, but US Army proven which is a big plus)... another option is to find a clean used XR600 or XR650 with title (key point) and convert over with a baja designs dual sport kit... which would get you a true offroad bike suspension that was street legal (like off the showroom floor KTM 525 EXC) Source(s): 40 plus years riding & wrenching my own bikes (currently have a '05 KTM 525 EXC & '02 KTM520EXC w/540 kit)
Take a long hard look at Suzuki's DL 650 VStrom. I've ridden one in the past and am seriously considering buying it once school is done, myself. It's more street oriented, but it can get up and go on the dirt as well. It's pretty much a ride it anywhere for any reason motorcycle.

Rebel, how tall are you & what's your weight. If you are new I suggest you not get anything heavy. You gotta be real tall to ride a drz400s unless you plan on reducing the height with longer links which will change the way the bike behaves a bit. consider also street tires with the drz400sm. also spokes require a tube you know that. if you can't put down heels on both sides then you got a problem.

for pure street check out SV650 or Ninja650.
the DRZ is a dog... the KTM's make waaaaay more power
I have KLR650 and I love it. It's versatile & reliable, has plenty of power for highway riding but with the right tires will go offroad in a heartbeat. It's easy to work on, cheap to insure. It gets 50mpg even with a K&N filter, Supertrapp exhaust and dynojet carb kit. The only caveat is that it a tall bike. If you under 6' you will definately want to lower it.
