49cc pocket bikes are they legal? |
i have a 49cc pocket bike and i was wondering if it is street legal or not i always thought it was cause its only 49cc if its not street legal could i at least ride it on a sidewalk or something or what please help probably not in Cali it has to be 90cc for the streets and 150 to hit the freeway but ya i would rip that thing all over my neighborhood The answer is, it depends on the State that you live in. My guess, would be no. 49cc pocket motorcycles are deemed motor vehicles, so you would have to haver a driver's license to operate one. However, the problem comes with registering and inspecting it. In NY, where I live & work, pocket motorcycles like yours are illegal and a source of great problems. Primarily, because they are ridden unsafely and because of the administrative items I mentioned above, illegally. Every year, the Auto Pounds in NYC, where I work, has stacks (& I do mean stacks), of confiscated pocket bikes. They can be confiscated for a whole host of violations: unlicensed operator, unregistered, uninspected, uninsured, determine true owner. Me - NYPD/12 years (last 7 w/Highway Patrol) theyre not legal on any roads or anywhere in uk except private land with permission. California here. Look for the headlight, tail/brake light, turn signals front and rear, at least one mirror, and license plate. If any of those are missing, it's not street legal. And no, it is not legal to ride it on a sidewalk. People around here who have those things either: a) ride it illegally in the streets (police don't come even when I dialed 911, so why would they stop someone from goofing around with a motorbike?) b) ride it at the Rose Bowl parking lot No, in most states the engine must have atleast 90cc's, but in alaska you can get a M2 license which lets you drive a motorscooter, motorcycle, or motordriven cycle with 50cc's or less, you can get the M2 license when you are 14. |
