How can I make my lifestyle greener and better for the environment? |
I don't know if I phrased this right but I tried lol. Let's start with my room, bathroom, n so on. What tips do you have? I changed all my the lights in my room to flourescent but I usually use the blinds til night time anyways. I recycle, reuse, and I try to reduce waste. I take shorter showers now n even brush my teeth in there too. I want to start planting trees this summer but to me that's not enough. I want to do more. What else can I do? PLLLLLLLEEEEEEEAAAAAASSSSEEEE HELP. Oh my parents don't let me bike to school bc it's a REALLY busy street so I carpool. The best thing you can do is to challenge others and be vocal politically. It's great to do these small things and I have been doing them for years. It doesn't amount to enough unless you can get your society to change. As long as our lives are based on "consuming", products will be designed to break, be new and improved and have to be replaced. We all really have to be prepared to inconvenience ourselves and live simpler (happier) lives. You are young and it is your future that we are trying to make the best possible. Be loud, be active and work on your parents too. You sound like you're doing a lot already. You can't solve all the worlds problems alone. If you have some control over the AC you might raise the temperature in your house (room). Take slightly cooler showers maybe. You are apparently still in H.S. so you don't have control of a lot of your life but you are doing what you can in the part you do control. Keep thinking and you'll be one of the "good guys". Congratulations on doing what you can. At Home . . . 1. Recycle aluminum and glass. 2. Buy energy efficient appliances 3. Run clothes washers only when fully loaded, but don't overload 4. Plant a tree 5. Do all ironing at one time 6. Buy recycled paper 7. Buy low wattage or compact fluorescent light bulbs 8. Turn off lights that don't need to be on 9. Use cold water instead of hot 10. Use small ovens or stove-top cooking methods instead of your large oven 11. Bring your own reusable bags to the grocery store 12. Write companies urging them to use paper rather than plastics and styrofoam 13. Buy products that will last 14. Support environmentally conscious businesses. 15. Don't drive when air pollution is bad 16. Teach your children about these ideas 17. Avoid buying rainforest products 18. Take the bus, walk or ride your bike to meetings 19. Buy locally produced foods; avoid buying goods that must be trucked in 20. Support or start local tree planting programs 21. Recycle aluminum and glass 22. Recycle newspapers 23. Subsidize and sell employee bus passes in the office 61. Encourage employees to phone first rather than driving 62. Use teleconferencing instead of driving to meetings 63. Take the bus, walk or ride your bike to meetings 64. Offer employees incentives for not driving 65. Buy gas-efficient or alternatively fueled vehicles for your fleet 66. Carpool to go shopping 82. Eat lunch at the office instead of going out 83. Call stores first to see if they have what you want 84. Combine several small trips into one 85. Shop by mail and catalogs 86. Plan an evening at home with your kids 87. Do errands on the way home from work 88. Encourage your teens to walk or ride their bikes rather than taking the car, and do the same yourself 89. Shop for a neighbor when going to the grocery store or form a neighborhood co-op 90. Have your car's emissions tested regularly 91. Tune-up your car, especially before winter 92. Check for proper tire inflation when gassing up 93. Don't repair your car's air conditioning yourself, have it serviced at a station that recycles CFC's 94. Don't buy a car with air conditioning 95. When buying a new car, let dealers know that fuel efficiency is important 96. Park and go inside instead of idling at a drive-up window 97. Remove unnecessary articles from your car; each 100 lbs. of weight decreases fuel efficiency by 1% 98. Enjoy sports and activities that don't require gas or electricity 99. Avoid accelerated starts to save gas 100. Copy this list and send it to ten friends 101. Think often about the future and how you would like the earth to be 100 years from now for your grandchildren and their grandchildren You have taken many excellent steps regarding conservation, recycling, and energy use. Are you a student? Many schools have Environmental Clubs; members share ideas and do volunteer work that improves the environment. Here are some ways I live green: 1. Recycle. My husband and I run a small volunteer recycling center. 2. Limit driving. I used to live 12 miles from work. Now I live 1 mile from work. 3. CFL ("curly"; compact fluorescent) bulbs. Yes, these contain tiny amounts of mercury. LED lights will soon be more readily available and are an even better choice. 4. Reduce your lawn. I am replacing my lawn, slowly, with pathways made of reused brick walkways (from a farm) and native plants. 5. Reduce pesticides, fertilizers, etc. I do not use pesticides unless we have a tick infestation (we live near woods). I use cow manure from a farm for fertilizer. 6. Reusable shopping bags. When you're buying a small item or two, bring your own reusable bag! Lots of people do this. 7. Compost! Read about composting at http://www.epa.gov/epaoswer/non-hw/compo... Your leaves, grass clippings, and kitchen scraps do not have to go into plastic bags in the landfills! 8. Wash clothes in cold water. Hang them up to dry (we have a clothesline!) Then fluff them up for 5 minutes in the dryer. They smell better and last longer. Thank you for caring about the environment! Your children, and grandchildren, and great-grandchildren (and so on) will live healthier because of your actions. No action is too small. |
