Motor cycles?

I learned to ride my sportster in 2003, took a quick course at a college, 2 days. Was riding with my boyfriend on his brand new dresser, we hit a deer, I almost died. I love to ride my own bike. So I rode again that same year about 4 months after the accident to make sure I wouldn't be afraid even though it wasn't my fault we hit a deer. It was just one of those things. My Question: would you ride again if you almost died? And two, I need to master turning around in the street, I just can't get that one down right without falling sometimes. My brother and boyfriend think it's because my bike is a little too high yet, even though we lowered it and did some other changes for me. I have a 2003 sporster, I'm 5 ft, 5.....I don't really have enough leg length to hold the bike up enough if I tend to lean towards falling sometimes. They think I need a lower and bigger bike. I need to practice turning more, but don't want to damage my bike, I did ride to N. Carolina and back safely.

Good for you hopping back on. I honestly don't know if I'd jump on a bike again after nearly dying, and hopefully I never find out.

As for the turning thing, I can U-turn in pretty tight spaces and I think it's mostly a matter of speed control. Quick turning is related to keeping your speed up so you can use momentum to counter the bike's lean while in the turn, but low enough that you aren't in danger of just running off the road. At the ends of any arc that you make, be sure you can back the bike up by paying attention to the grade in the road, and mostly just walk the bike back vertically not trying to make it turn. You should never be in a situation where you're leaned over to turn while trying to keep the bike off the ground with your legs.
Hello Curious! I have a similar dilemna with my wife. We are both Harley fans. I taught her to ride a Sporty I owned a few years back in a wide open paved parking lot with me on the back. She is 5'0. But for riding alone we put her on a Honda Rebel due to its low seat height and weight (300lbs). She has bailed herself out of the same street maneuvers which you are having problems with because the bike is small and light. Problem is this is the year we are upgrading her to a 883L. I am worried she too will drop the bike and get hurt. Plus damaging the bike hurts the worst.
Long story short...you should really practice your slow speed maneuvers in a big flat paved lot. slow sharp turns, figure eights, lefts, rights, and even backing up. With practice you'll become comfortable with the handling and how far you can push it. Confidence! Sorry for the book...good luck!
Ha, somebody else with similar problems ...
My legs are too short for most motorbikes so I ride by now a Kawasaki, since I wanted to ride easily 300 and more miles a day.
For turning your bike there are two things you can do:
1. Look for a big parking space with no or only very few cars. Put down a marker at one place and ride circles around your marker. With time and training make the circles smaller and smaller. Do your circles in both directions. It will as well make you more comfortable leaning into turns.
2. Ask your boyfriend for some time of his and try to handle you bike while you are beside it. Ask him to stand by on the other side in case you get into trouble. It is not so hard to do as it looks, but needs some training to get a feeling for what you can do.
I see where you are coming from. Back on November 5, 2005 I hit a 180lbs. deer doing about 60mph at midnight. I would be dead right now if it wasn't for my helmet, leather jacket, and leather pants. The only thing that happened to me was my right shoulder broke and I got a little road rash. The deer on the other hand was not so lucky.
Also I had trouble with turning until I lowered my bike down some. I have a 1980 Honda CX500D and it stands tall. I had to put 11" shocks on the rear and lower the front a couple of inches.
only you can decide if you want to riode again, i can happen again, another wreck. there is no way of knowing. you have to take that risk and decide yourself.
The key words in the first part of the question is almost died. Heck everytime we do anything as a living being we almost die, if you stop breathin you die, so technically, oh, my God I almost just died! I've been through some wicked accidents, auto, and scoot, it's part of the game. If you enjoy something, that's not illegal, or immoral, do it, (do the illegal stuff in private, use air freshener) be careful, but live, layin on your deathbed would be the wrong place to realize, man I wish I would'a done that! As for tight radius turns, pratice, alot. start ridin in slow circles, tighten them. It sounds like you may be a bit gun shy, just pratice, do not put your foot down, ankles are not that strong! Watch the throttle, turnin on the throttle or lettin off causes the bike to bobble, work on smooth.
