Loud Pipes - Do They Really Save Lives? |
In deciding on a new bike (Harley or a BMW), I went riding with a friend. He has a new BMW GS and I rode his 95 GS, which I was impressed with (the 95 has similar hp and torque of a 05 Harley). At a popular biker caf茅 we chatted up some bikers on the subject of loud pipes. There were 8 bikers -3 BMW, 4 Harley, and 1 Suzuki. BMW guys thought loud pipes, on a bike with just 70 hp, were obnoxious, and served no other purpose than to call attention to oneself. 3 of the 4 Harley guys agreed and said they don鈥檛 save lives, but said you needed them to be part of the "lifestyle". 4th Harley guy said it was un-American to not have them and "everyone" loves the sound. Suzuki guy is a HP officer and said there is no proof loud pipes save lives. He said he sees more first time rider Harley accidents than any other bikes and loud pipes didn鈥檛 matter. He said that loud pipes are illegal for street use and that those using them have serious issues, likely related to small wieners. What do you think? I can tell you what Harley itself thinks, which is "no." And I agree. Source(s): http://motorcyclecruiser.com/newsandupda... I've heard loud pipes save lives when it comes to trucks... not motorcycles. Loud pipes save lives. There is no guarentee that you will be heard but certainly does not hurt to have them loud,,I think it does help. HD-4ever I have seen an ambulance with full lights and siren behind a car whos driver was totally oblivious to what was happening. But there are occasions like blasting into a crowded intersection when I do think some of the louder pipes to awaken the car drivers that you are there. I guess its like the chicken or the egg.... The only thing loud pipes accomplish is to piss off the neighbors when you fire that thing up early in the morning, and they encourage people to support the passing of more restrictive laws against motorcycles. All three of my motorcycles run stock exhaust systems and I like it that way. In fact, the loudest thing on my BMW is the stereo system! 45 years of motorcycle riding experience |
