Why do some bikers like revving their engines? |
Every so often I hear people on bikes going by making lots of noise with their engines. It's obvious they're disturbing people, yet they do it anyway. I'd like to know what the enjoyment is, especially from those of you who own bikes and rev your engines up and down streets. I'll tell you why I rev my engine at a stop. Look at my avatar. I ride an H-D FXDWG. It's air cooled. When I'm moving, I'm cooling with air. When I'm stopped, only the transfer of oil cools my motor. When I rev the engine, I get the oil moving faster, which helps in cooling. We are not all assholes, but we know our bike. Sometimes we need to do something that seems strange to people that don't ride. Don't sweat it. We ain't all shitpots! POWER! There is something about that purr a Harley makes............................ maybe the same reason punks ride around blasting their stereos, its annoying! Look over and ask the other rider if he thinks his bike is going to die if he doesn't rev it. Some are pretty loud for sure. I think that loudness does not always equal noise. A loud 2 cycle engine is torture to my ears (like rap music), but a moderately loud Harley is beautiful sounding, especially on a mountain road late at night. Louder pipes do add a margin of safety in traffic as well, a lot of drivers that do not see real well can still hear. But that is a minor point. And there is the power thing as well, cannot deny it. Ego booster and attention grabber. Bikers are human too, even though some of us barely look it. just to show off Bikers rev their engines for lots of different reasons. 1) Ego 2) Because they have a new exhaust system 3) Mating call 4) Penile enhancement Actual good reasons for revving engine 1) Blipping the throttle before downshifting to match engine speed to gear selection 2) Blipping throttle when taking off to avoid stalling the engine. |
