How many people get injured/killed by traffic on the streets of Rome? |
After just returning from Rome, one of the things which will remain with me for years is the crazy driving and lack of adherance to the traffic lights. When the pedestrain crossing said green, the cars and bikes would still drive, just got me wondering how many people actually fall foul of the traffic each year or is it a case of people learn how to dodge traffic better and is it more tourists that locals that get injured? Having lived in Italy myself, I can say that it is a general problem all over the country. Pedestrians and cyclists have no right to be on the road whatsoever, and limited rights to the pavement! Pedestrian crossings are only there for decoration, and so that if you get hit on one you have a better claim against the driver than if you were crossing elsewhere. The best technique is to cross the road confidently, looking straight ahead (if you make eye contact with a driver, all is lost) , whilst relying on your peripheral vision to save you from the kamikaze mopeds.
