AEM short ram VS cold intake?

I have the two of them, my friend gave me his cold intake made by AEM. I currently have the AEM short intake on my car. Is there a huge difference between those 2 types. He said the resonator has to be removed, is the car loud with that thing off, sounding like sport bikes? He doesnt have the AEM water valve, he told me that thing only works, when the filter is completely submerged in water. He said that if you run through water puddles in the streets, highway, there shouldnt be a problem, as the filter has to be completely submerged in water. is this true. Thanks a LOT I live in NJ, so we dont get bombarded with floods a lot, at least i know in union county

Your friend told you right...

The CAI should provide a bit more power than the short ram. This is because the principle behind cold air induction is to introduce air into the intake maifold from outside of the engine engine compartment. The engine radiates a lot of heat. Also there is a lot of 'dead air' surrounding the engine. These two factors account for increased air temperature from either conventially charged engines (i.e., intake near engine / using a resonator box). This increased air temperature equates to a rarification of oxygen...and less oxygen to combine with the fuel mean means less engine output.

The CAI system gets around the above problem by doing three things:

1. Sucks in cooler, more oxygen-rich air from below & outside of the engine comartment.
2. Eliminates the resonator box entirely. Resinator boxes function like a 'front end' muffler...makes the car sound more sedate, but at expense of restricting air flow...robs engine of some power. CAI systems use a nearly strait pipe of maximum usable diameter to insure minimal flow restriction.
3. Use of high flow filter, such as a K&N type or equivalent.

Short rams do not enjoy the benefits of CAI systems. However, you'll still see gains from short rams since they have eliminated that nasty resonator box. So short rams are a midway gain between a stock induction system and a good CAI system.

BTW, AEM makes a product called 'V2', which is an enhanced design to conventional CAI. Their V2 employs a simple but eligant design that creates a 'resonace effect' that is the equivalent of a mild supercharger. Simply put, this is a similar principle behind the resonance/tuned scavaging effect that performance exhaust headers deliver. This effective gimmick actually increases low end torque while exceeding the performance of conventional CAIs. Various sport luxury sedans/SUVs now employ this feature. It's called VVI, or 'variable volume induction'. It provides both a CAI with a tuned short ram system that delivers the best of both worlds...the CAI switches in to take over at the higher RPMs.
whichever one pulls in cooler/cleaner air will be the better one....so typically that would be the cool air intake. A little water won't hurt it...just don't go through Katrina like waters...
Water plus your engine kills. Basically both short or ram dont make any HP differen maybe 1HP if anything, cold brings colder air but dosent flow fast, while short flows faster but hotter. Honda-tuning did a test short ram made more hp. I suggest you to look into real intake ARC
i have a short ram intake and live in northern cal. the cold air intake will outperform the short ram as far as horsepower gained. usually you gain about 5 for a short ram, and up to 10 with a cold intake in some instances, but not in every setup. the cold air intake filter will be located under your car around the fender so the air will be much colder than the short ram which is in the engine bay. but if any water gets sucked up into the intake system ( rainy weather, puddles, car washes, etc...) it could cause major engine damage. if you live in a wet environment i would use a short ram intake. i think aem has a water shield you can install for your cold air intake but its not 100% water proof. both will make your engine rumble a bit louder, and it sounds much cleaner since your engine is breathing better.
There is a bigger difference between the short and the cold air intake. The cold air gets you more power but about the bypass valve, it's summer there's no worry and it only cost like 40 dollars.
