How can I increase my balance so I can ride a bike?

I never learned to ride a bike without training wheels. I had a bike when I was five, but I never took the taining wheels off of it. It is now my goal to (re)learn how to ride before I graduate from high school.

I can pedal at a stationary bike with no problems, but when I try to get onto a regular bike, I have AWFUL balance. I wobble and have to put my foot down on the ground. I can not even get STARTED riding, my balance is so terrible.

I looked into adult training wheels, but it is very costly and expensive and I'm afraid that in using those, I may become dependent on them. So I am wondering, what can I do to increase my balance on my own?

I attempted to "pedal" my legs while the bike had the kick-stand down, but I don't think this did any good.

Thank you for your help!

practice on a soft piece of land such as grass or dirt.
have safety equipment on in case you fall dodgy.

first of all it is mainly confidence, try not to think about falling off, as this will place doubt in your mind.

start of with lots of initial speed and let momentum take it's coarse peddle, peddle, peddle.

because if you are starting at a slow speed it is very likely you will fall. even people who do know how to ride a bike will find it more difficult to ride at a slow speed.

keep practising,
make sure the seat is low down to :
prevent an increase in injury,
boost confidence.
and lower centre of gravity which will help with your balance.
what you do is take the bike out to a field with soft dirt.. get on it and try to push it with your feet ..let it roll then when you can balance that try to peddle.. its the only way to learn good luck
riding a bike really isnt so much about balence as it is about confidence, i think balence and confidence are very related in general but nevermind that thats a whole nother story, the guy that suggested riding in a feild with soft dirt had a good idea, definatly dont get training wheels you DORK! (just kiddin) but yeah just do it, the forward motion and steady pedaling is what keeps you vertical, you will get the hang of it im sure, i have faith in you! (-:
It is quite possible that the problem you are experiencing has to do more with speed than balance. As you pedal faster the rotational weight of the wheels will want to keep you going straight rather than "wobbly". When you walk at your normal pace you are fine, but now slow it down a lot, you will find that you're fighting balancing issues. Same thing for the bike. The first gent suggested a field or something soft. Super suggestion. Get out there and just let it go. Don't be afraid to pedal quickly. Don't look down but rather focus on the point you are riding to. Good luck to you.
no, don't rely on the kick-stand or other assistance, they are dangerous if you fell. btw, try these:

set the saddle lower before you get the confidence

practice on a lawn in case you fell off

give yourself good initial speed, then you won't stall and have time to correct any mistakes

vision yourself riding the bike, don't concentrate on balance, first use the steerer to adjust, once you're comfortable with it, try shifting your body to effect the same

look some way ahead, don't look down

relax your arms (the bike is never that heavy)

ease your back, trust the bike

don't stare at the obstacles, look at the exit or the direction you need to go

... you will be able to ride in less than an hour :)
I don't think there is anything you can do to increase your balance on your bike except trying to ride it. Many people will probably tell you to start on a grass lawn, but at your age I think a parking lot would work better. My reason for this is that usually grass is bumpy and will slow you down quickly. But at the same time you shouldn't start on any paved hill or you could seriously hurt yourself.I would start on a parking lot just pushing yourself off a curb, then try to pedal.
yes, if u ride with no hands on the handle bar for a long time. and it is doable
