If I ride my bike 10-15 miles a day, how much weight could I loose? |
A friend of mine rode on a tredmill about 10 miles a day for 5 weeks and lost almost 50 lbs. If I rode my stationary bike 15 miles, and stayed away from fast food joints, how much weight could I loose by the the middle of August (when school starts back)? In the long run, yes, riding a bike is a decent way to get in shape, but don't be surprised if within a few weeks you've actually gained weight. See, when you get on your cycle, what you're actually doing is building muscle. If you have a relatively low muscle mass on your legs, you could add up to 15 or 20 pounds of muscle weight onto yourself. What would be an even better idea than doing that would be to go for a 30 minute walk every day. Or, buy a work-out step, and do an aerobics work out every day. Both of these workouts are much less stressful on your joints, and will help you lose your desired weight by the time school's back in. Keep in mind that dieting is also a good thing to do along with working out. Eating fruits and vegetables (though it may take some time to adjust to them) will give you strength and energy, with virtually no calories. Greasy foods, and fats will cause your body to slow down and feel heavy. All in all, I think you're on the right track to getting in shape. If you want some other ways to lose weight, talk to your doctor, or consult a local dietitian. (A dietitian will be listed in the phone book). They will help you plan out meals and make it really possible to lose the weight you desire. It depends on what you weigh now. If your friend was overweight, she lost pounds that she needed to loose for her health. If you are overweight, you might loose a lot of weight too. 15 miles is a lot, and if you overwork yourself, it can be very damaging. I would stick to maybe 5 to10 miles every day. Good luck First you can't go by how much weight your friend lost because your bodies are completely different. And I'm sure that you are not following the same diet plan so, that will have a big impact. Its good that you are staying away from fast food, but fast food isn't the only reason we gain weight. You also have to watch what you eat at home, and please, please, please don't starve your self. Trust me I have been there done that and it not healthy. Anyway. I do believe that if you cut back on foods that are unhealthy you will see a big difference in your weight, and the tone of your body and muscles. However, I don't believe that you have to kill yourself to jump start a weight program, especially if you have never worked out before. I was taught more is not always better, ease your way up to what you want to be at. Another thing that may be fun and help you track your progress is to take pictures of yourself before, midway, and after you are finished with your program. Not only is it a tool that you can use to remember where you were, but it is also a motivating tool. Good Luck. i go on 20 mile bike rides. Thats what i usually do and i dont overwork myself. And it helps build a lot of muscle in the leg. |
