What gives you the better workout? |
Is it better to ride a stationary bike or go riding on a real bike. Lets assume you will be going the same speed for the same amount of time. Real bike, no question. On a real bike, you use your core muscles to keep the bike balanced as you ride. Depending on where you live, you'll probably have to climb some hills and otherwise vary your pedaling style, which uses different muscle groups, all of which translates to a better work out. Spinning classes do try to better emulate the experience of bike riding, but a real bike still uses your whole body in a way that a stationary bike does not. Be sure, however, to maintain your pedaling speed - coasting is possible on a real bike (and not on a stationary bike) and doesn't actually contribute to your work out. Of course, there will be times when you will want to/have to coast (down hills, while approaching a stop), but at all other times, try to keep your pedaling consistent. Plus it is much more pleasant to ride outside, with the sun shining on you and the wind blowing through your helmeted hair. :) real bike, definitely. you get the turning and the arm workout, and hills and such :) If everything is equal it would have to be a road bike!! No balance is required on a stationary bike, so less arm work out and most importantly less core workout!! However if you do a spin class they can be a great workout. It's nearly impossible to to mimic on the road. I find them one of the most physically demanding classes over other aerobic class I like the fresh air..... Speed is relative to the ground, I assume. This means the stationary bike is the equivalent of flat straight road, on a perfectly windless day. On the other hand, the real road bike route includes hills (which means you'll work harder to maintain the pace on the climb), wind (to make you struggle to maintain position), and perhaps uneven surfaces (rough road, chewed up shoulder, debris, etc). All of these mean you're working more muscle groups - which means a better workout overall. Besides ... nothing beats the endorphins from sunshine and fresh air! |
