Is there any easy-on-the knee cardio exercise for an overweight woman with osteo arthritis to lose weight? |
effectively? Swimming is not an option. Does power yoga help? How effective is stationary bike? Yes, a stationary bike is your best option for your knees. You can burn as many calories as any other machine, you just have to use it as hard as you would another machine. Try real biking or mountain biking. Stationary bikes are REALLY hard to keep up with. No motivation. Too boring. Why can't you swim? If you can't dance, run, or walk swimming is about your last good choice. I had knee surgery when i was 18 and my knee still hurts all the time...i exercise daily but swimming is my cardio i do a fast paces lap swim and water jog..not only is swimming easy on all joints especially knees it is one of the top exercises to lose weight!!! I've been doing gentle yoga and my knees have been better. If you have never done yoga, start with that. Have you asked at Curves? I'm thinking of going there now that my knees are better (I'm about 50 pounds overweight, and doing the Weight Watchers program.) Good Luck! I have bad knees... arthritis and blown out cartiledge. I like the eliptical trainers at my gym. No impact and you get all the benefits you would if you were walking on a tredmill. The absolute best exercise for someone with osteo-arthritis is water aerobics in a heated pool because it is not weight bearing and easy on your joints yet provides resistance to you muscles. If you do not have access to a pool then getting on a stationary bike can help but won't burn as many calories as walking would. Mix in some resistance training with weight machines to build some lean muscle mass to increase your metabolism. I think you would find power yoga difficult at first until you get yourself in a little better shape. sports medicine healthcare professional |
