Painful knees?

I have arthritis all over, bursitis and rheumatoid factor is positive.
I signed up for a health club to get some weight off and get back into shape (had a car accident last year and it messed me up so my neck hurts everyday). The treadmill is ok, but the other day on the stationary bike my knees got so painfuul i had to stop after 5 min (i was able to do 30 min before). So I tried the Arctrainer (elliptical machine?) and if i put it on manual and keep my legs straight, i can go at a pretty good clip. what other machines or exercises can i do with painful knees? I am 45 and a woman w/hypertension (another reason to workout).

Get yourself into a swimming pool NOW. Swimming and exercises in a pool are one of the best workouts you can have with almost no impact on the body. Anyone who has extra weight and bad knees needs to start in a pool and work their way out. You should never, never, never get on a stationary bike with bad knees. It will just make them worse. If you do ride the bike it should only be to get yourself warmed up for other exercises. Also, stay off the treadmill, the impact on the knees is the worst here. If you belong to a health club you should have no problem finding a swim aerobic class. Good luck.
Swimming is great for people with joint problems :)
The two people above have good answers.

Do some swimming since it is a very low impact exercise.

Also, you might want to try some Glucasomine Sulfate.
